Willapa Valley Director District Boundary Changes Proposed
Affects school board elections only, not schools
Raymond, WA-- Every ten years, after each U.S. Census is completed, school districts must review the boundaries of their board of director districts to ensure equitable geographic representation. Willapa Valley School District is divided into three geographic regions or districts, each with a board seat and has two at-large seats. Candidates for school board must run for the seat of the director district they live in or for the at-large position. By creating three equal director districts, geographic diversity is ensured on the school board. Each position is elected by all district voters, so each of the five directors represents the entire district in their board actions.
These boundaries are completely unrelated to school attendance boundaries: this process will not change any neighboring school district boundaries.
In October 2022, the district contracted with Sammamish Data Systems to develop a proposal for new director district boundaries based on the latest census data. Since the last realignment of director districts, there has been a substantial shift in population growth.
The district’s total population is 2,316, so ideally, around 772 persons would live in each district. According to the 2020 census, each district grew at different rates, with 2nd district losing population (-56 or 7%) and the 1st district growing the most (+33, or 4%).
A presentation and public hearing on this proposal will be held at the May 22. 2023 school board meeting, which begins at 6 PM at Willapa Valley High School, Room 181. Current and proposed maps are also available in the district office, 22 Viking Way, Raymond, WA and on the district website at www.willapavalley.org. The first reading of the proposal is scheduled for the May 22 board meeting. The second reading of the proposal and potential adoption of the proposal is scheduled for the June 26, 2023 board meeting.
